Valerie Raps

Licensed marriage family therapist, LMFT #102598

I work with children, couples and families, providing individual, group and family therapy to help individuals identify needs, process and express feelings, cultivate insight, develop social skills and learn coping strategies to manage stress and regulate emotions.

My work with children includes meeting with their parents or primary caregivers. Each family has its own values, culture, expectations and beliefs. I have found that my interventions are most successful when I understand each child’s family life. Meeting children’s caregivers gives me the opportunity to offer parenting skills that will help them improve the way they relate to their children and reinforce positive behavior. My approach begins with identifying each person’s strengths, interests and talents, which I then use to help them address issues in their lives that are interfering with their personal growth and interpersonal relationships. I also utilize expressive arts in my sessions, especially with children to help them process feelings that are difficult to express in words.

My background is in mental health treatment, art and education. I have worked as an after school childcare program director, art enrichment teacher, elementary school teacher, and art therapist.  Since 2014 I have been working as a school-based therapist for a Therapeutic Special Day Class at Sunnyvale Middle School providing individual and group therapy to students as well as parent coaching to support caregivers.
